Just under a decade after they were first released on Keep Hope Alive, the LIFEbeat AIDS awareness benefit compilation produced by the almighty Blaze featuring Underground Dance Artists United For Life, two of its more memorable songs get a nice rerub by a couple of notable remixers; and who doesn’t like a rerub?

Soulful punters Tony Loreto & Mark Di Meo crank up the funky acoustic baseline, percussion and live sounding piano, brass sections for a full-bodied remix of the sweet « Hiya Luv » sung by Kenny Bobien. UK’s DJ Phil Hooten also gives a nice Latin-y percussive and savory unplugged Disco version, with Blaze’s original version included.

Another legend, Byron Stingily, graces us again with his vox on « Spread Love, » with rerubs by eastern EU’s Ricky Inch, who gives us a fast & funky Main Mix and more jazzed out horned up version on his Trumpety Mix. Balaeric master man Kiko Navarro also submits his version of this tune with his Keep On Dancing Mix and it’s a lovely clap-happy, funky guitar riffed, plucky baseline wonder. It’s like coming home to open arms.

Keep Hope Alive fut un projet musical lancé en 2004 à l’initiative du groupe Blaze et au bénéfice des malades du sida.
Josh Milan et Kevin Hedge avait réussi à regrouper sous le collectif United Underground Dance Artists United For Life, des artistes aussi célèbres que Barbara Tucker, Arnold Jarvis, Byron Stingily, Darryl D’Bonneau, Dawn Tallman, Joi Cardwell, Michelle Weeks, Sabrynaah Pope, Ultra Naté, pour n’en citer que quelques uns.

Un album de 12 titres fut édité en 2004 par King Street Sounds suivi un an plus tard par une version Expanded en double CD sur le label SuSu.
KSS ressort en septembre deux titres de cet album, Hiya Luv par Kenny Bobien et Spread Love interprété par Byron Stingily.

Les seules vraies nouveautés sur cet EP sont le remix de Hiya Luv par le duo Tony Loreto & Mark Di Meo (désormais très actifs sur le label new-yorkais) et celui de Spread Love par Ricky Inch.

Bien que je trouve les originaux bien meilleurs, cet EP aura le mérite de faire découvrir ces titres à la nouvelle génération alors qu’il renforcera sans doute la nostalgie des plus anciens envers le groupe Blaze, désormais dissous pour de sombres affaires d’argent.
